Suffolk has more than 100 miles of coastline, stretching from Lowestoft in the north to Felixstowe in the south. If you include the Stour and Orwell estuaries around the Shotley peninsular, this distance doubles.

While the likelihood of a marine pollution incident affecting the Suffolk coast is negligible, any maritime incident could have considerable and long-lasting impacts on the environment and local communities and economy. For this reason, procedures have been developed to reduce or eliminate the risk, and this mitigation exists in the form of multi-agency planning and the resulting SRF Marine Pollution Plan.
