What to Do Before or During a Flood

Flooding can happen quickly, so it is important to be prepared and act promptly when flood alerts or warnings are issued. Check whether flooding is expected in your area and sign up for flood warnings to receive updates by phone, text, or email.

If flooding is expected:

  • Turn off gas, electricity, and water supplies if it is safe to do so.
  • Move family members, pets, vehicles, and important belongings to higher ground or upstairs.
  • Install flood protection measures such as flood barriers or air brick covers, where available.
  • Follow advice from your local council and emergency services, including evacuation instructions if issued.
  • Use your Personal Flood Plan to help you respond quickly and safely.

Stay Safe

  • Never walk or drive through flood water, as it may hide hazards such as debris, open manholes, damaged roads, or contamination from sewage.
  • Call 999 if you or someone else is in immediate danger.

Create Your Flood Plan Having a flood plan helps you prepare for emergencies, protect your household, and know what actions to take before, during, and after a flood. Use the GOV.UK tools to create a tailored plan for your home:
