Get prepared

We recognise this is a difficult and uncertain time for everyone affected by the wildfire. The safety and wellbeing of residents remain our priority. Below are answers to common questions about the ongoing response, access to the site, support available for displaced residents, and future updates. As the situation develops, we will provide further information as soon as it is confirmed.

  • What caused this wildfire?

An investigation into the cause of the wildfire is currently underway. The RSPB confirmed on Thursday that the fire began on land within the Minsmere nature reserve, but the cause has not yet been established. Until investigations are complete, it is important not to speculate about how the fire started.

While it is possible for a wildfire to occur naturally, most wildfires are caused accidentally by people and open areas with public access can be at greater risk of accidental ignition.

Members of the public can help reduce the risk of future wildfires by following fire safety advice, including avoiding barbecues and open fires in the countryside, disposing of cigarette butts responsibly, and taking all litter home, particularly glass bottles and disposable vapes. If you see a fire, move to a safe location and call 999 immediately.

  • Can wildfire smoke affect my health?

Yes. Smoke from wildfires can irritate the eyes, skin and airways, causing symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, breathlessness and chest discomfort. It can also worsen existing respiratory conditions, including asthma. If you experience persistent or severe symptoms, contact your GP or NHS 111.

Residents affected by smoke are advised to stay indoors with doors and windows closed where possible. Keep hydrated, use fans to help stay cool, and carry any prescribed inhalers with you. Once the smoke has cleared, you may be able to open windows to ventilate your property but continue to follow the latest public health advice.

  • When can I collect my possessions from the site?

Residents and holidaymakers are being allowed access to the caravan park as of 8 August to collect personal belongings. Access is being managed by Suffolk Police, who will escort people safely into and out of the area.

If you are eligible for access but have not yet received information about arrangements, please visit the Information Centre at Westleton Village Hall from 9 am to 4 pm.

  • How will I know when I can collect my possessions?

You will be contacted directly as soon as arrangements have been confirmed.

Please do not travel to the site until you have been advised that access is permitted.

  • Why can't residents access the site at the moment?

The wildfire remains a major incident and emergency services continue to work at the scene.

There are ongoing safety concerns, and it is essential that access is restricted until the area has been assessed and declared safe.

  • What support is available if I have nowhere to stay?

If you have been displaced by the incident and have no alternative accommodation available, please contact East Suffolk Council as soon as possible for housing assistance and support.

  • Where can I get the latest information and how can I stay updated?

We recognise that this is a very difficult and worrying time for residents and owners affected by the wildfire.

We will continue to provide updates as further information becomes available via our social media and website. Please check Suffolk County Council website regularly for updates: Large forest fire on Dunwich Heath – Suffolk County Council
